Introduction
So you want to make Modifications
for Minecraft?
It’s a good thing! Well… most of the time :P
You will need a strong intention to learn how to create Modifications
! Especially the beginnings will be difficult and frustrating.
If you still think that you can do this, go on and do your best! ^^
Requirements
So, in order to start with this tutorial you need a few things:
- The intention to learn something that may change your life
- The Java Development Kit (JDK)
- An IDE (Development Environment (don’t ask me where the I comes from))
- I would recommend you either Eclipse
or IntelliJ
at this point.
- The Minecraft/Mod Development Kit (MDK) which can be found here
Note
This Tutorials will refer to the latest or last Minecraft Version. You can find the versions of each category on the home page
Setup
-
Installing the JDK
The first thing you might want to do is to install the JDK, currently
(Minecraft) Forge
does not support any Java version beyondJava 8
you should keep that in mind. There isn’t much to explain about this, it’s a simple installer, just choose the correct one for your system. -
Installing the idea
Well, there isn’t much I can explain here, usually it’s just an Installer and if you can’t manage that on your own you shouldn’t try to code anything.
-
Installing the MDK
So, now comes the interesting part!
Hopefully you have already downloaded theMDK.zip
(Probably got a different name) you’ve been told about in theRequirements
section. When yes, then continue, if not then do it now.
So the first thing you need to do, is find a location for your workspace, we would recommend something that is easy accessible. And offers quite some space, you might want to have more Mods in the future.
Once you’ve found the perfect location it’s time to create a Folder for your Mod
(Modification), into which you can unzip the MDK.zip
.
Now there are a lot of files, you do only need minority of them. You can delete everything besides:
- gradlew
- gradlew.bat
- build.gradle
- the gradle
folder
- optional
- gradle.properties
- the eclipse
folder
- the src
folder
While none of the optional are “officially” required, I had sometimes trouble if I removed them, therefore you should keep them.
So when that step is done, you can install it.
For that you need to open your commandline/powershell/terminal, and go into the folder where you extracted everything.
!!! info
There is usually a way to open the terminal in the folder you are. For windows it would be Shift + Right Click
(there is an option in the list)
